The Last Town Chorus

I am a musician. You may not have known that about me. As a musician, I enjoy an eclectic array of music. You will find me, at anyone one time, enjoying Rock, Trip Hop, Metal, Classical, Dance, Folk, Irish, World, and recently Chill. I realize Chill is a relatively new category, but I find it is a category that is deserving of its own place in the lexicon of music.
That brings me the point of my post. I have recently discovered “The Last Town Chorus“. You may have heard this song? It comes attached to her video on Youtube. She is Megan Hickey. The Village Voice said it best; “She sings like an Angel and plays lap steel guitar like the Devil.”
I love the remake of this David Bowie song. After listening to several other original tracks on her album, I found I really liked most of them as well. She is friends with “The Innocence Mission” A band I have followed for well over a decade. The Innocence Mission may not even remember it, but my band once played on the same bill with them. Along this same genre is 16 Horsepower. I use the term “same genre” very loosely. None of these bands sound anything alike. But they have one common theme that runs through each of them. They have a divinity about them that is reminiscent of the old days of Preachers crossing the countryside to spread their gospel in their good old fashioned tent revivals. In this particular case, the gospel is a melancholy music that reaches down deep inside and touches your soul.
I am by no means a religious person. I wrestle with my beliefs often, but I find I am drawn to these bands for their version of the aforementioned tent revival. A little bit of fire and brimstone for the masses. The Angels and the Devil surely follows these bands around the country battling for very soul. Be careful, on any given night listening to these bands, you may find yourselves a little closer than you might think to heaven or hell. But, then again, it all depends on your perspective. Regardless, you won’t leave the same as you entered.
So, go out and listen to these bands and support the music that may never truly be commercial, but is truly relevant for this day and age.
