My kids play with Cabbage Patch Dolls on occasion. They play with those ugly, weird, out of proportion Cabbage Patch Dolls. Just looking at them makes me think ughh! But! Here is the thing…Our Cabbage Patch Dolls are black. We are white folk. Oh, and if you must know, I could give a shit that they are black. Two of my best friends are black. We live in a world that has lots of black people, yellow people, white people, brown people …. you get my drift. Why shouldn’t my kids be exposed to that in the dolls we have lying around the house?

So then, why are some people surprised by the fact that my girls DON’T have a problem playing with black dolls. They have white dolls, and no one seems to say anything. They don’t even know these dolls are black. Isn’t that a beautiful thing? And for those people who seem uncomfortable with my kids playing with black dolls I only need remind you that we live in a world that is increasingly less divided by race? If you want to talk about division, let’s talk about right vs left and rich vs poor. Now that is something that offends me.

So, it may come as no surprise to those that know me, that I don’t even think twice about allowing my kids to have black Cabbage Patch Dolls. What should REALLY come as a surprise is that my kids have those friggin dolls at all, as ugly as they are. Oh, and not because they’re black my friends. No, because they are just plain ugly. Black or white, yellow or brown.
