Acute Myeloid Leukemia

I have not written about this subject in the past because I really didn’t understand it and didn’t want “out” my family member before they were ready. For about two years, my dad has had Myelodysplasia. This is a disease of the Bone Marrow in simple terms. It is also known as Pre-Leukemia. Unfortunately, recently he has progressed into AML or Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He is undergoing treatment and we are hoping for the best outcome possible. Which in this case would be remission.
The reason on bring this up, is that I find that the blogging community, and the online community in general, is a wealth of information on a wide variety of issues. So, I am humbly asking any of you, who have had a loved one go through this, to please let me know what treatments your loved one was provided and how they worked. Did your loved one survive? Are they still in remission? What lessons were learned from treatment? What to avoid? I think you get my drift.
In the meantime, I will do my best to keep you up to date on my Dad’s progress. Oh, and if you see me, I will be the one wearing the Livestrong bracelet and doing my best to keep the faith.
I thank you for your help and advice in advance.
Peace.

I don’t know anybody this disease, but I’m sorry to hear about your dad. I’m sending good and hopeful thoughts for your family.
Me too. All of our best thoughts. The best of the best.
Keeping your family in my thoughts . . .
I came across your site via Google. I have refractory AML — was diagnosed 7/06 at the age of 25. So far I’ve been through several rounds of chemo and a stem cell transplant — no remission yet. I’m currently undergoing experimental treatment using Decitabine. It’s an “easier” chemo and seems to be a good option for older people. Insurance may not cover it, though, and it’s about $20K/mo. It is being used in some clinical trials which often have funding available to help the patient. The fact that he’s had a form of MDS first impacts treatment. You’re best to make sure you’re with a doctor/hospital experienced in treating AML.
Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts.
Thinking good thoughts for your dad.
I also have another piece of news for you….You have been tagged. The rules: Start with 7 random facts/habits about yourself. People who are tagged have to write their 7 things on their blog. Then choose another 7 people to get tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment to tell them they have been tagged and to read your blog …

I don’t have any information or advice. Just best wishes for your dad.
I was diagnosed with myelodysplasia 6 years ago, transformed to AML 7/01, went through double induction chemotherapy at MD Anderson in Houston, then had an allogeneic stem cell transplant at Sloan Kettering 4/02. I have been in complete remission since. I hope your father is doing well and has an equally good outcome.- Bruce
This ia about probably the only center in the world where leukemia is cured with out side effects. If it is not too late to go through, may be helpful very much.
