I travel on occasion for work. (See previous post) Well recently I was sitting in a coffee shop in a small Northern California town and sitting next to me where two women who had a discussion that went something like this.
Woman #1: Hi, How old are your girls?
Woman #2: this one is 28 months and she is 4.
Woman #1: Oh, have you decided on a private school for your 4 year old yet?
Woman #2: A private school? She is going to go to our local elementary school?
Woman #1: Oh, your going to put them in public school? Really? You know they will just grow up so disadvantaged if you do that? They won’t learn anything useful in life.
Women #2: Really! My husband teaches at the local elementary school. Why would you say that?
Woman #1: Oh, I’m sorry. I mean as parents we always want what is best for our kids. Right? Private school is Sooooo much better and you need to start thinking about volunteering and getting recommendation letters and positioning your daughter to get excepted so she won’t have to wait a year. Oh and you really should start saving. It costs about $15,000/year per child for Kindergarten. Priavte school really is the best.
Woman #2: I think I will stick with public school. Anyway, it’s kindergarten.
(Here comes the best part…)
Woman #1: You know your kids will grow up a prostitute or a drug addict if she goes to public schools. All they teach kids in public schools is how to get by. They don’t teach them how to be successful. Ask your husband. He knows.
Woman #2: Really. Did you go to public school?
Woman #1: Oh no. Of course not. I would never set foot in a public school.
Woman #2: Sounds like a great argument for me sending my kids to public school.
With that, she walked off. And I laughed.
