Why Columbus Day?

At the risk of offending my Italian-American friends, Why Columbus Day? Why did FDR decide that the 2nd Monday of every October would be set aside to celebrate Columbus Day. How about Leif Erickson Day? You know he landed in North America about 500 years before Columbus. Maybe the Norwegians didn’t have as big a political lobby as the Italians. Maybe they didn’t care like the Italians. Since it seems so few people actually get the day off, we should move it to November 7th and really celebrate by doing something meaningful. Let’s give everyone the day off so they vote.
